With the historical port city of Genoa (Christopher Columbus was born here) at its centre, the Italian Riviera can be best described as a narrow strip of land that stretches from the French Riviera near Ventimiglia to Capo Carvo close to the boarder of Tuscany. It lies between the Ligurian Sea and the mountain chain that forms the Alps Maritime.
Discovered by the wealthy classes in the early 19th Century, the Italian Riviera has it all: Unesco world heritage sites, picturesque villages, charming marinas, enchanting fishing ports, unspoilt landscapes, lush green mountains, rich vineyards, medieval churches, romantic beaches and the list goes on and on!
Having listened to the advice of our most experienced captains and yacht charter crews, and taken on board the suggestions of many of our clients, Princess Charter has put together an Italian Riviera yacht charter itinerary that takes in the highlights of this region. You may feel that you prefer a more bespoke itinerary, taking in some particular or preferred routes or villages. If this is the case please ask your dedicated Princess charter broker or charter Yacht captain, who will be only too pleased to facilitate your requests.
From Portofino all the way to Riva di Traiano, spending 7 days cruising the Italian Riviera will leave you with a feeling of revitalisation and harmony as you become one with some of the most spectacular natural beauty that there is on any Riviera.
DAY 1 AND STARTING POINT.
Portofino is one of the loveliest yachting ports in the world, and is on most charterers must-do list, hence we start our charter from here. This very aristocratic resort has something for everyone! From walking paths and trails in a national park to diving and snorkelling in the surrounding sea which has also been designated a national park due to the unique coral and fauna. In fact such a natural peaceful sanctuary is the sea that even dolphins and whales gather in the Cetacean Sanctuary! It’s not just the natural beauty which will entice you. For those who would like to indulge in some shopping before the charter, you will find that amongst the ancient buildings, the beautiful backdrops, and pastel coloured homes , names such as Luis Vuitton, Cartier, Hermes, Gucci and others can be found dazzling amongst the beautiful surroundings.
DAY 2 PORTOVENERE
A beautiful contrast to the very lovely Portofino, Portovenere is a charming gorgeous fishing village. With the calming crystal blue sea acting as a backdrop you will be taken in by the picturesque colourful houses. Away from the hustle and bustle of city life the tranquility in this village will not fail to touch you. Neither will the warmth of its people or the fresh beautifully cooked sea food.
DAY 3 ELBA
Overnight cruise to Elba, which is a green and mountainous island hardly touched by time. Elba has many coves and attractive harbours to explore. If staying in the port of Portoferraio, you can visit the villa where Napoleon spent his exile – Villa dei Mulini. Whilst on this lush island, it is worth trying the local wines – Elba Bianco and Elba.
DAY 4 PUNTA ALA
An oasis of peace. This fascinating area is rich in wines that accompany traditional products such as cheese. The recipes are in line with the Tuscan tradition of simple and genuine food; also the products are still farmed by small businesses, a symbol of tradition still alive in this land.
DAY 5 GIGLIO
Like a pearl in an oyster, the small Giglio isle lies cradled by warm blue seas in the southern corner of the Tuscan Archipelago. Giglio’s mild climate, unspoilt nature and crystal clear, emerald coloured waters will leave you speechless. You can go ashore and visit Giglio Castello, a typically Tuscan medieval hilltop village or enjoy the scuba diving activities.
DAY 6 PORTO ERCOLE
This pretty seaside resort is one of the most famous in Tuscany and is one of the two main towns on Argentario. Porto Ercole is a place more associated with pleasure, good food, boats and relaxation. You may consider making a reservation at the 2 Michelin star restaurant Il Pellicano and enjoy a view of the Tyrrhenian coast and the surprising creations of the Michelin-starred Chef Antonio.
DAY 7 GIANNUTRI
A half moon shaped island located at the extreme southern part of the Tuscan Archipelago, Giannutri is the Tuscan Archipelago’s most beautiful island. It’s part of the Parco Nazionale dell’Arcipelago Toscano, which means visitors have to be careful not to disturb any of the flora or fauna. Finish your cruising on Riva di Traiano.
THERE ARE MANY RIVIERAS IN THE WORLD, HOWEVER ALL WILL BE HARD PRESSED TO COMPETE WITH THE OFFERINGS OF THE ITALIAN RIVIERA.
